Pickleball is a paddle sport that mashes up tennis, badminton and table tennis, played on a small court with a perforated plastic ball. It's easy to learn, gentle on the joints, intensely social, and — critically — fun within about ten minutes of picking up a paddle. That low skill floor is the entire growth story.
The anti-craze craze
It's the anti-craze craze: no algorithm, no product to flip, just people playing a game together. The small court means more rallies and more talking; the easy entry means a 25-year-old and a 65-year-old can play the same match. Post-pandemic, a generation hungry for offline community and low-impact exercise found exactly that.
The numbers, US and India
In the US, roughly 24.3 million people played in 2025 — a 479% jump since 2020, making it the country's fastest-growing sport for several years running. Globally there are 5-million-plus active players across 84 countries, and the equipment market hit $1.8 billion, heading toward $9 billion by 2034. India's arc is even steeper: from virtually no infrastructure in 2016 to hosting a World Championship in 2024, with active courts jumping from around 200 in early 2024 to over 1,200 in early 2025. The All India Pickleball Association projects a million players by 2028.
Just go play
Unreservedly yes. It's cheap to try, kind to your body, absurdly welcoming, and delivers the real thing so many of these trends only gesture at — actual, offline human connection. If any craze on this list is worth literally getting off the couch for, it's this one.
