India's cafe boom and the coffee generation
A tea country is quietly falling for coffee. From Blue Tokai to a Third Wave outpost in every metro, India's café culture is having its moment — with filter coffee still quietly winning.

India has always drunk coffee in the south, where the steel-tumbler filter coffee is a religion. What's new is the café — a wave of specialty, "third wave" coffee brands turning a beverage into a lifestyle for young urban Indians, complete with single-origin beans, latte art and Instagrammable interiors built for a generation that treats a café as an office, a date spot and a personality.
Coffee as identity
Coffee became a medium for identity and "intentional experiences" for Gen Z and millennials — a good cup that fits an on-the-go, aspirational, work-from-café life. Around 69% of Indian millennials see coffee as a companion for conversation, and half prefer it when meeting friends. The result is one of the fastest-scaling café races anywhere.
The market is sprinting
India's specialty coffee market is growing at roughly 13.7% a year, and the wider coffee market is projected to nearly double from about $9.5 billion in 2025 to $17 billion by 2034. Chains are sprinting: Third Wave Coffee alone reached 165+ outlets across a dozen cities by mid-2025, with venture money flowing into Blue Tokai, AbCoffee and rivals. And the quiet twist: traditional South Indian filter coffee still holds nearly 50% of India's coffee consumption — heritage outrunning hype.
Order the filter kaapi too
This is a lovely, low-stakes craze — a country discovering good coffee and building community spaces around it. Enjoy the specialty wave, but the real find is often the ₹30 filter kaapi at a decades-old Udupi joint, which quietly outclasses a ₹350 pour-over. The trend is fun; the tradition is better value.
