Run clubs are the new dating apps
Burned out on swiping, singles are lacing up instead. The run club became the hottest place to meet someone — and, inevitably, a new source of drama.

The premise is simple: instead of matching with strangers on an app, you show up to a group run, sweat alongside actual humans, and let connection build the old-fashioned way — repeatedly, in person, over shared effort. In 2025 run clubs became the single most talked-about way for twenty- and thirty-somethings to meet.
Why the apps lost
Dating-app fatigue is now near-universal — the endless swiping, the appearance-first objectification, the conversations that die in the DMs. Run clubs invert all of it: attraction forms through low-pressure, repeated, activity-based encounters where personality and consistency show up before a profile does. Bolt that onto the broader wellness and "community" craving, and you get a movement. Roughly 1,000 New Yorkers attend singles run clubs every week, and nearly one in five Gen Z respondents say they've dated someone they met exercising.
The receipts — and the reality check
It's not a rom-com. Reporting from New York and Boston found the bigger clubs now suffer the same ailments as the apps they replaced: people ghost, misrepresent their relationship status, and turn a run into a scene. As one Time piece bluntly put it, running clubs can be a "horrible place to date." An oversaturated market is an oversaturated market, on pavement or on-screen.
Why it still wins
Here's why it still scores well: even if you meet no one, you went for a run and joined a community. The downside of a bad app date is a wasted evening; the downside of a bad run-club date is a good workout. Go for the running and the people; if romance happens, treat it as a bonus, not the KPI.
