For a generation fluent in games and starved of wealth-building routes, "invest and maybe hit big" was an irresistible pitch — and social feeds full of screenshots did the marketing.

The receipts — mostly warnings

The research is unusually blunt. Studies find gamification pushes users toward higher leverage, larger bets and riskier stocks, chasing the leaderboard rather than sound decisions — behaviour academics repeatedly compare to gambling. Regulators in the US and EU are circling; a proposed "Trading Isn't a Game Act" sought a formal study of the harms. The core finding: early losses can set a young investor's wealth back by years.

The boring alternative that wins

Investing early is one of the best financial decisions you can make — the gamification is the trap, not the investing. A no-frills index fund on autopilot builds wealth; a confetti-blasting app that nudges you to day-trade options mostly transfers your money to more patient people. If an app celebrates your activity, it's optimised for the house, not you.
