AI companions and the loneliness economy
Millions now text a chatbot that never leaves them on read. It's soothing, it's a real business — and it's already in court.

AI companion apps — Replika, Character.AI, Snapchat's My AI, China's Xiaoice — offer an always-available chatbot styled as a friend, mentor or romantic partner. Unlike a general assistant, the pitch is emotional: it remembers you, mirrors you, and is endlessly patient. It is the loneliness epidemic meeting the recommendation engine.
The comfort machine
Loneliness is the raw material, and the product is frictionless: no risk of rejection, no scheduling, no judgement. The number of companion apps surged 700% between 2022 and mid-2025, with about 220 million cumulative downloads by July 2025. Surveys suggest a majority of teens have tried one. A Harvard Business School study even found they can measurably reduce loneliness in the short term.
The receipts — and the alarms
The market is projected to be worth tens of billions by 2030. But the harm ledger is filling fast. In early 2026 Character.AI and Google agreed to settle lawsuits alleging the platform contributed to teen mental-health crises, including the death of a Florida teenager who formed an intense dependency on a bot. Italy's regulator fined Replika's maker €5 million for privacy violations. Researchers warn heavy use can deepen isolation and erode real social skills over time.
A rule of thumb
As a low-stakes tool — practising a hard conversation, journalling, a moment of company on a bad night — it can genuinely help. As a primary relationship, especially for teenagers, it's playing with something we don't yet understand, on platforms optimised for engagement, not wellbeing. Approach like alcohol: fine in moderation, dangerous as a coping mechanism.
